Welcome to Heralds Prairie Township

The township is named after one of the first Settlers that arrived here from Tennessee by the last name of Herald. The area had a large prairie and became known as Heralds Prairie before the War of 1812. It is 54 square miles. Joseph Boone (Daniel Boone's brother) and Samuel Dagley came to the township about 1814 and were among the first settlers that developed the area. Other early settlers were: Colonel Hosea Pearce, Benjamin Latimer, the Bryants, O'Neils, Wiese, Leatherses, Baileys, Samuel and Solomaon L. Garrison, James M. Hart, A. Harris, and George and B. Knight. There were many deer, bear, turkey, squirrel and wolves.
